Sugar! Part 1 Some facts

DID YOU KNOW:
->That table sugar (sucrose) is a disaccharide made from a blend of fructose and glucose?

->Glucose and fructose are metabolized differently? Glucose is the main fuel for the body. Insulin responds to glucose in the bloodstream. Fructose is metabolized by the liver and is treated more like a fat. Guess what High Fructose Corn Syrup does?

->Each 4 grams of sugar listed on a food label = 1 teaspoon of sugar?

->”Sugars” come in many forms with many names”

->Food labels can be deceiving? Ingredients are listed in order of how much of each ingredient the product contains from most to least, often breaking down “sugars” used into all their different forms so it doesn’t look like there is so much “sugar”.

  1. Joy Bell says:

I am not sure what to make out of the information that fructose is metabolized by the liver and sugar by insulin. So if I have high cholesterol I should use sugar and if I have diabetes I should use fructose?

  2. The impact of added sugar in the diet is the culprit. I will be adding more articles in the Sugar series. The average person consumes 152 pounds of sugar per year. People used to prepare their own food and control what they ate. Today there is sugar in just about everything processed, and sometimes hidden on labels. Look for more articles coming up soon.
